The main objective of the SIV course is to reinforce flight safety, focusing on controlling in-flight incidents and avoiding and recognizing piloting errors. It is also an opportunity to learn how to use your emergency parachute.
Tandemteam has neither the place nor the infrastructure to give this kind of courses, so we have selected the centers with which we have a similar vision and philosophy of teaching paragliding. That is why we recommend Entrenuvols school for the SIV course.
The Entrenúvols SIV course is based on the experience of Jordi Marquillas as EN test pilot since 2005, SIV instructor since 2003 and on the hundreds of SIV courses we have organized since 2003.
In summary, the SIV course is highly recommended for all pilots starting to fly in turbulence (thermal).
For pilots who have already done a SIV, we propose to do a more advanced level to continue with the progression.
The course has a duration of 7 flights and 4 days, normally varying from 4 to 5 days depending on the weather. The 5th day is a reserve day.
Our priority is to offer personalized training and to optimize the pilot’s autonomy in performing maneuvers.
SIV BASIC or ADVANCED is defined by the progression within the course, the controlled maneuvers, not the name of the course or the duration. If a certificate is required, the certificate will be issued based on the progression, not the name of the course.
The main objective of the course is to control our glider in incidents and departures from the normal flight domain.
Most pilots come to do our SIV course to be more comfortable and safe under their glider and to get to know their reactions. The SIV helps to strengthen the bond of trust between the pilot and the glider.
For experienced pilots, it is a good time to take stock of their technique and continue to progress. An SIV is not magic, but it is an extremely efficient way to progress and automate the essential piloting to manage incidents. Thanks to the personalized training, we adapt the course to each pilot and it allows us to gain a lot of learning speed.
Finally, the most important thing: the SIV allows you to better understand and manage your MENTAL state in a stressful situation in flight, during an incident or demanding situations (flight in turbulence, complicated decision making, etc…).
First day:
17h: Presentation of course, review of material and first bracing
Following days:
9h: Start of flights at the Sant Antoni reservoir
Afternoon: Analysis of videos, theory and brífings in La Pobla de Segur)
Under normal conditions we will do 7 flights spread over 3 days. That is, the duration of the course is 4 days with 1 day of reserve.
The first step is to make a review of the installation of the emergency parachute and a basic review of the harness. We will detect bad installations (the main and most serious problem), expired or wrong size parachutes, etc… unfortunately there is a high percentage of serious installation errors that seriously compromise the safety of the pilot.
We will explain the details of each maneuver we will practice:
The most awaited part of the course!
In the basic course we will do 7 flights, spread over 3 days (plus 1 reserve), 2 or 3 flights per day, no more. The mind needs time to process the information, so there is no point in doing many flights in one day.
On the other hand, in each flight we have about 800 of effective altitude, practically twice as much as Annecy, for example.
In the afternoon, theoretical session:
Analysis of the videos: of the flights to reinforce successes and correct mistakes. Debrifing.
Theory: Aerodynamics, new technologies, emergency parachutes, pendular movements, homologations, etc…

The practical part of the SIV courses takes place in the Sant Antoni reservoir, in La Pobla de Segur, our SIV Center. The theoretical part and video viewing is done in La Pobla de Segur. The take-off is done with a winch winch installed on a motorboat.
This allows us to do without climbing to take-offs, moving around, opening and folding the glider several times… we take-off and land in the same place.
Between flights we can lie in a shady spot watching the evolutions of our companions, discuss the flight with the instructor, have a drink at the Xiringuito or take a swim…
Flying conditions are very mild until well after midday, at which time we normally stop flying.
It is not a closed valley of the Pyrenees with turbulent and strong breezes? On the contrary, it is a vast expanse of open water that expels the thermals and calms the atmosphere.
The number of daily flights is intentionally limited. It is impossible to assimilate any knowledge in a stressful situation.
On the one hand, we do not need to make many flights because of the low effective altitude.
Each flight, on average, we will have about 800m effective to practice maneuvers. On the other hand, there is no need to run… it is materially impossible to cover the whole syllabus in 2 days… inevitably things will be left out.
Thus, we will make, at most, between 2 and 3 flights per day, which are the ones that most pilots assimilate and take advantage of.
Other flights only serve to increase stress and feelings of insecurity and frustration.
Each day there will be practical and theoretical sessions, both equally important.
Entrenúvols has a professional team of lathe operators and patterns with a long experience in its operation.
In addition to SIV courses, we also use the infrastructure for homologations, acrobatic competitions or exhibitions around Europe.
